Academic Disciplinary Hearings
For students, criminal charges may have consequences in their academic life. Schools and Universities promulgate rules and regulations that students agree to abide by as a concession to attend school. Academic misconduct proceedings may be ancillary to criminal proceedings or pursued without any sort of government involvement. If you or your child is arrested and charged with a crime, there could be misconduct proceeding instigated by the university. In those cases it is imperative to have an attorney present. The university proceedings may not seem like a big deal, but statements made during the proceeding could possibly be used against you later in the criminal proceedings. Moreover, depending upon the nature of the violation it may be helpful to have an attorney present to ensure a fair hearing and negotiate a deal on your behalf.
